How is it already the end of August? It was a big week as the international school finished their third week and we welcomed our national students and teachers. One big happy family!

Grades 1 & 2
一年级和二年级
First and second grade read about the importance of accepting others in Nerdy Birdy by Aaron Reynolds. Nerdy Birdy feels like he doesn’t fit in with the “cool birds,” Eagle, Cardinal, and Robin. He always feels alone. But one day, another Nerdy Birdy invites him to join their flock! Now Nerdy Birdy has hundreds of friends and he learns to be friends with birds who are different.
一年级和二年级的学生读了亚伦·雷诺兹（Aaron Reynolds）的《书呆子小鸟》，这本书讲述了接受他人的重要性。书中的书呆鸟觉得自己与“酷鸟”（雄鹰、红雀和知更鸟）格格不入，他总是感到孤独。但有一天，另一只书呆鸟邀请他加入他们的群体！现在，书呆鸟有了成百上千的朋友，并且学会了与不同的鸟类成为朋友。

The results are in! Last week our 3-3 class voted on our next book, and they chose El Deafo by Cece Bell. This is the true story of Cece’s life growing up being deaf, told in a graphic novel format. It is a funny story but also heartwarming and teaches readers to be confident and find strength in themselves. This is a chapter book, so we will be reading it for the next several weeks. This week we read what happens when Hilo tries to go to a regular Earth elementary school! Things take a turn when we discover that Gina has returned from New York! However, she’s not the same as she was three years ago. Will she join in their adventure?

We finally met Aunt Molly, and she has some good advice for Olive about making friends. It’s okay to have lots of friends or just a few best friends. It’s okay to have everything in common with your friends and it’s okay to be different. You don’t need to join a clique to make it through school and you don’t have to perfectly click with everyone. Be you!

Middle School
初中
Textbook time! School is beginning to pick up and teachers are assigning the class reads. The 6th graders are starting American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang, the 7th graders are starting Coraline by Neil Gaiman, and the 8th graders are starting The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie. All great picks! I just finished reading Coraline myself…perhaps a choice for a future movie night?
