Happy one month of school! This month has been full of growth and change, and we can’t wait to spend next month with you too!

Grades 1 & 2 got to read their first nonfiction book in library story time! In The Bug Girl (a true story) by Sophia Spencer, the author tells her own story of what it was like growing up as a girl who liked bugs. Some people thought it was weird. Others thought it was scary. But bugs are fascinating! From ants to butterflies, Sophia teaches us that it’s okay to love bugs! Ms. Isabel also taught the students about the Dewey Decimal system, which is how we organize our nonfiction books in the library.

In this week’s reading of El Deafo by Cece Bell we learned about the Phonic Ear, which is Cece’s new powerful hearing aid. Even though she feels lonely at school, she also feels like a superhero! Her new hearing aid gives her super-hearing! Now the only problem is Laura, who is supposed to be her best friend but is more like a bully. Will Cece have the courage to stand up for herself?

Last week we learned that Hilo is actually a robot that can heal himself! This week, Hilo and his friends realize that there are more Rants coming and they must be prepared to fight them and defend Earth. In the meantime, Hilo’s biggest challenge is acting normal around DJ’s family!

This week we dive into the history of American television as Olive and her Aunt Molly watch old variety shows. Aunt Molly had hoped that seeing so many different acts would inspire Olive to choose an act of her own–but now Olive thinks she would like to host! This could be the perfect job for her.
