Spring is coming! To get in the spring spirit, this week we read a book about flowers and the science behind their beauty. Flowers can be found everywhere in life. Have you ever thought about how flowers bloom? Or how their seeds grow into flowers? What about where seeds come from? What’s Inside a Flower? by Rachel Ignotofsky uses exquisite illustrations to showcase the life of flowers and scientifically interpret the natural beauty of life. It also briefly introduces the important contributions of plants to nature and humanity.

Think you can handle a big book? This book has 533 pages! But don’t be afraid–there are lots of pictures and short chapters. The Invention of Hugo Cabret is a unique “novel in words and pictures” by Brian Selznick that tells the story of Hugo Cabret, a young boy who lives behind the clocks of the Paris train station. Filled with mystery and suspense, readers will learn about strange machines, a brooding old shopkeeper, and a boy on a quest to find the truth. We prefaced starting this unusual book with practice analyzing and predicting using large poster images from the story. This is a great skill to nurture for all readers of any age!
