Prepare your brains for learning! As we’re slowly entering spring, we want to take time to remind students about important library rules and ways they can best use the library.

Ms. Ray created a picture book to help students learn how to find a book’s information. In the story, an ancient magic library has several elves that live in a call number tower with a barcode and home with a warm bookshelf. After reading Ray’s book, the students played a dice-throwing game and practiced answering questions about a book’s information, such as the call number, spine, author, and barcode. After that, the students filled out a worksheet to test what they have learned.

We’ve made it to week 4 of reading The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick, and we are already 187 pages into our story! Hugo has now started working for old man Papa Georges in the hopes of earning back his stolen notebook…but we still don’t know if he burned it or not! We are also learning that Papa Georges and Hugo both like magic (hint: that’s an important part of the story!).

The Mirror Season by Anna-Marie McLemore is a special mixed genre called magical realism. This means that most of the story is realistic fiction, but with a small fantasy element. In this story, Ciela and her new friend Lock are both trying to recover from a traumatic assault–but the more she tries to fight remembering what happened that night, the more her town begins to turn to glass. The only way to prevent her whole world from shattering might be to look into her memories and face the truth.
