As a final treat, Ms. Ray shared with students The 12 Animals of the Chinese Zodiac by Ma Lai. This picture book is a beautifully illustrated retelling of the ancient Chinese legend explaining how the twelve zodiac animals were chosen and their order decided. Through engaging storytelling, the book introduces readers to Chinese culture and the characteristics associated with each zodiac sign.

In the last week of the semester, our older primary students read and experienced a pop-up book that celebrated loong culture: Finding the Chinese Dragon by Fang Jiayi. We learned that the Chinese loong is different from the Western dragon, and that the the loong symbolizes peace and harmony.

To encourage students to read more over Spring Festival holiday, Ms. Claire worked with the middle school and high school teachers to schedule 25 book talk lessons. During these lessons, Ms. Claire prepared over a dozen books to talk about, each featuring a different genre or type of book. At the end of the lesson, students were invited to explore the library and find a book they’d like to read. Remember, if you ever need help finding a book, or would like a recommendation, be sure to ask the librarian!
