This week, we read a picture book called Hi! Fly Guy by Tedd Arnold, which tells a story about friendship and courage. When Buzz captures a fly to enter into The Amazing Pet Show, his parents and the judges tell him that a fly cannot be a pet, but Fly Guy proves them wrong. Afterwards, students completed an activity to identify the smartest, smallest, stinkiest, and cutest animals they knew.

Roald Dahl, a best-selling author of children’s books, is renowned for his works such as Matilda and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, among others. This week, we explored what shaped his childhood to make him such a remarkable author by reading his autobiographical books. The first story we selected from Boy: Tales of Childhood recounts one of his visits to the doctor, where he underwent an adenoid operation without anesthesia. In his subsequent autobiography, Going Solo, he describes an air crash he experienced in Africa, noting, “This is not the first time I have had an operation without anesthesia.” The students were completely captivated by these “scary” experiences and are eagerly looking forward to the next story.
