Younger Primary G1-2

Excited by the trip to the Beijing Zoo this week, our younger primary students read a funny book called Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin, a Caldecott Honor winner. In the story, the cows find an old typewriter and start leaving notes for Farmer Brown. When they decide the barn is too cold, they ask for electric blankets! With the cows on strike and the hens joining in, Farmer Brown finally makes a deal—and the farm is peaceful once again.

Older Primary G3-5

Our older primary students continued exploring books by Mac Barnett. The Skunk tells the story of a man who is relentlessly pursued by a solemn, determined little skunk. From the opera to taxicabs to the ferris wheel, there seems to be no escape! Eventually, the man finds a world without the skunk—but soon begins to miss it and turns back to follow the skunk instead. We discussed the possible meanings behind the story and talked about how picture books are created, especially since our students are writing their own books right now. Then we read How This Book Was Made—what a funny and clever story!

Ms. Claire is reading Circe by Madeline Miller.
Although I am already familiar with the mythology of Circe, I absolutely love the writing style of Madeline Miller. She always builds such rich worlds and I feel like I am truly experiencing the story alongside the characters. I wish I had read this sooner!
