We’ve done a lot of looking back this week! Looking back on how much we’ve grown, how much we’ve improved, and how much we’ve come together as a country over the last 80 years. As a community of readers we can also learn a lot from stories of courage, even from fictional characters.

In this week of the commemoration of the end of WW2 in Asia, upper primary read books of hope in a time of war. The Cat Man of Aleppo by lrene Latham and Karim Shamsi-Basha tells the story of the Syrian capital when many have deserted it, and the cats remain there lonely, confused, and hungry. Alaa, an ambulance driver decides to help them and soon he has help from his neighbors and later people from around the world.

The Treasure Box by Margaret Wild is about a family that moves away from their country during a war but looks after a treasure that is more precious than gold. It is a book about the people’s history that is contained in a box that the boy buries, and returns to much later in his life. Both stories let us think about how people in times of war can hold hope in their hearts.
