Stories have a special way of helping us celebrate who we are and imagine new possibilities. This week we explored names, fairy tales, and poetry—all the little details that make us unique and bring joy to our reading lives.

Names are an important part of who we are, so it’s important that we learn to be respectful of everyone’s names! In That’s Not My Name by Anoosha Syed, our main character Mirha is constantly feeling upset by people mispronouncing or simplifying her name. She doesn’t want to be misunderstood or simplified! Mirha teaches us the beauty of uniqeness and the power of honoring each other’s names.

In the same vein, Alma and How She Got Her Name by Juana Martinez-Neal shows readers the history behind names and how we can treasure the memory of our family through our names. Some cultures remember their ancestors by naming their children in honor of them, which is what Alma learns from her father. Do you know the history of your name?

You probably know all about the classic fairy tales: Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, the Little Mermaid, etc. But what about twisted fairy tales? Revolting Rhymes, a book of poems by Roald Dahl is a classic that was first published nearly fifty years ago. In this retelling, Little Red Riding Hood is actually an evil animal killer and Cinderella chooses a decent man over the brutal head-chopping prince!

In The Real Story of the 3 Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka, the story is told from the point of view of the wolf who claims he is not, in fact, big and bad, but just a poor wolf with a cold who kept sneezing. We talked about how twisted fairytales can use surprises, characters from different stories, magic, and humor to make them entertaining and different.

Secondary Library

In Library A, Ms. Claire worked with Ms. Price’s seventh grade classes on a two-day Intro to Poetry lesson. On Thursday the students learned about four types of poetry and several poetic devices that they could use in their writing. On Friday they got to practice their poetry skills with three new types of poems: ekphrastic, song response, and blackout. It was a great time, and I encourage everyone to try their hand at different types of poetry!

Thanks for an amazing week!

See you next week!
