Books have their own secret language—and our students learned how to read it! They explored the parts of a book, from the cover to the call number, and practiced using the library system to find titles on the shelves. To wrap up, everyone joined in on fun games that turned book-finding into an exciting library adventure!

Ready to improve your writing with new skills? Grade 2 students had fun exploring figurative language this week and learned how writers use personification to make words come alive! We read Water Rolls, Water Rises by Pat Mora, a beautiful story that follows water as it moves and changes around the world. Water doesn’t just roll and rise–it also dances, shimmies, and gurgles!

You’ve probably heard the classic tale Goldilocks and the Three Bears—but have you heard of the Goldilocks Rule? Ms. Maria used this fun idea to help students find their “just right” books using the Five Finger Rule, while reading from Richard Scarry’s Best Nursery Tales Ever. After the story, students explored trays of books at different reading levels to discover their very own Goldilocks book—one that’s not too hard, not too easy, but just right!

In the graphic novel adaptation of his book Just Beyond: Scare School, three strange new students attend a mysterious middle school where nothing is quite normal. When two curious classmates start to investigate them, they uncover secrets that reveal the newcomers are from another dimension.

Grade 6: Qianmen
Recommendation: Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin

A great connection to Chinese folktales and legends, Where the Mountain Meets the Moon is also a perfect complement to learning about traditional crafts and storytelling.

Grade 7: Survival Island 怀柔生存岛
Recommendation: Hatchet by Gary Paulsen

Hatchet by Gary Paulsen highlights courage, quick thinking, and perseverance in the face of challenges—just like the teamwork and survival skills students will practice on Survival Island.

Grade 9: The Great Wall at Mutianyu

Grade 10: Beijing Weather Station
Recommendation: Storm Runners by Roland Smith
