I’m grateful for the morning, I’m grateful for the noon.
I’m grateful for the evening, I’m grateful for the moon.

In this season of gratitude, even birds should be thankful for their bird friends! Ms. Ray read Nerdy Birdy by Aaron Reynolds with the first grade students, and together they talked about how the characters learn to appreciate friends who include them and show kindness. The story helped students think about gratitude—especially how important it is to be thankful for friends who accept us just as we are.

It’s important to feel gratitude inside and out–which connects us to the second grade read, Planet Earth / Inside Out by Gail Gibbons. Inside us all are a heart that beats and a brain that thinks, but what is inside the earth? The Earth has a crust that we live on, a mantle that moves and melts, and a core that burns hot and strong. Earth science is the foundation to many other sciences–a great inspiration for young scientific minds!

Ever feel like you don’t have enough space? A Squash and a Squeeze by Julia Donaldson is a fable about an old lady who thinks her house is too small, but soon discovers it’s actually just right. The story teaches readers to appreciate what they have and to show gratitude for the comforts in their lives.

Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Peña is a story that reminds readers to notice the everyday beautiful moments we share with others. It follows a boy and his grandmother as they ride the bus and discover kindness, connection, and wonder in ordinary places. The book encourages gratitude for the small, simple things that make life special.

Imagine starting with a tiny village and watching it grow into a giant empire that rules huge parts of the world—that’s the story this book tells. The Story of Rome by Rosie Dickins shows readers what Roman life looked like, from gladiators and emperors to busy markets and powerful armies. Reading this book helped students see how Rome’s inventions, buildings, and ideas still shape the world we live in today.

You’re never too old to enjoy a beautiful picture book! Library A has two new bulletin board displays where students can read an entire picture book on the wall. On one board we have a rendition of the iconic ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas story by Clement Clarke Moore, and on the other board is a simplified picture book version of Dream of the Red Chamber by Cao Xueqin. Come enjoy these beautiful books!
