The Three Questions by Jon J. Muth, based on a story by Leo Tolstoy, is a thoughtful picture book that follows a young boy named Nikolai who wants to find answers to three big questions: When is the right time to do things? Who are the right people to listen to? What is the right thing to do? With help from his animal friends and a wise turtle named Leo, he learns that the answers come from paying attention, being kind, and helping others when they need it. The story teaches children how to make caring and thoughtful choices every day.

Often when discussing responsibility we talk about taking care of a pet–but have you ever thought about how dogs became pets in the first place? This week in G3-4, we read From Wolf to Woof: The Story of Dogs by Hudson Talbott, which related to our December SEL topic of Responsibility. We learned how wolves might have become friends with humans in the early days, sharing food, hunting and their homes. Then the wolves changed over many years of breeding to suit the needs of humans, and became what we know today as dogs. We compared the responsibilities as owner to our pets to the first wolves who were human’s companinions.

In The Tortoise & the Hare, a classic well-known fable, a speedy hare learns the hard way that bragging doesn’t always win the race. This fun retelling invites readers to cheer for the slow-and-steady tortoise as he proves that determination can surprise everyone.
