Learn all about the upcoming Christmas holiday with the book Christmas by Lori Dittmer. We also took some time to review parts of a nonfiction book: the table of contents, index, and glossary, which are very helpful for finding information! As a gift from the library, students got to pick a bookmark sticker out of the Christmas stocking.

After the first snow of the winter fell on Beijing last week we read books about snowflakes! Snowflake Bentley by Jacqueline Briggs Martin tells of a boy in a farming community who was obsessed with water in dew, raindrops and most of all in snowflakes. He drew, and later photographed the wonderful patterns that were formed by these natural phenomenon, and noticed how each snowflake was unique, never matching or copying another. We learned that the variations are due to the influence of temperature, humidity and wind when the snowflakes are being formed.

The Snowflake Mistake by Lou Treleaven & Maddie Frost is a picture book that tells of a queen of snow and her daughter who breaks the snow machine and has to hand-cut each flake, resulting in many varied different designs on them. The students from all classes then had the chance to make a class-folded paper snowflake which are then posted on this site, where you can also find the instructions of how to make them: https://www.instructables.com/How-to-Make-6-Pointed-Paper-Snowflakes/

Without a doubt, one of the all-time greatest Christmas stories is The Nutcracker. This week grade 5 read Jan Brett’s version of the classic tale, originally written by E.T.A. Hoffmann. This magical tale is about a young girl named Maria, an enchanted nutcracker, a toy soldier army, and a mouse king! Together they journey through a snowy, magical land and meet the Sugar Plum Fairy for a perfect Christmas Eve night.

Finishing out the year with Z: a novel of Zelda Fitzgerald by Therese Anne Fowler. Many people know Zelda’s husband F. Scott Fitzgerald, the famous writer of the classic American novel The Great Gatsby, but Zelda herself was also quite the artist. A dancer, a theatre enthusiast, and a writer herself, this historical fiction novel bursts with living color.
