Insects are waking up outside! In a soft “text to world” connection, first grade students read A Good Place by Lucy Cousins. Every insect needs something different for a perfect home, and friends Bee, Ladybird, Beetle, and Dragonfly search outside for what they need. It can’t be too busy, or too noisy, or have too many humans! Maybe a quiet garden will be perfect for all four different insects…

Now in chapters 4-6 of The Alien Next Door: The New Kid, Harris is even more sure that new boy Zeke is an alien. Zeke can do things normal kids can’t–like do a handstand on one finger! During art class, Zeke is also incredibly skilled at mixing paints and making rainbows out of different combinations. Is this proof of his alienness? Or just artistic prodigy? Our students tried the same paint experiment as the characters in the book to see for themselves!

Everyone knows Google–but what do you know about a googol, the number? G is for Googol by David M. Schwartz is a unique math alphabet book. Students answered math questions to get a chance to spin the spinner which told us which pages of the alphabet to read. We learned about the Fibonacci sequence and made tables showing how adding together combinations from the binary series can make any possible numbers. Even though Math and Science Week is over, there’s a googol more things to learn!

The Longest Book in the Library!
Curious students discovered the loooooongest book in the library this week! And no, not long as in number of pages! When stretched out, this book is several meters long! This interesting book, Along the River During the Qingming Festival is a famous ancient Chinese scroll painting. It vividly shows busy city life, crowded streets, busy rivers, shops, boats, and people of different jobs in the Northern Song Dynasty, reflecting the lively and real social scene at that time.
