Teacher Expectations

Library Class Blocks

Lessons with the librarian should be scheduled as far in advance as possible to allow for adequate planning. If a lesson needs to be canceled or moved, please contact the librarian as soon as possible and we can discuss possible available times for rescheduling the lesson. If the weekly schedule is disrupted for some reason, whether due to school events or librarian cancelation, it is not automatically assumed that the lesson will be made up. A busy schedule has unfortunately made rescheduling very difficult, but the librarian and teacher can work together to decide what is best in each circumstance.

Expectations

  • Classes arrive at the start of the block and not during passing period. This allows the librarian time to clean up after the previous class and also take care of personal matters in between classes. Classes that arrive early will have to wait in the reading room or in the hall until the block begins.
  • Each class is expected to have at least one supervising adult from the class. This block is a teaching block for teachers and the library requires extra help supervising students, especially when the librarian and library staff are not as familiar with the students. Homeroom teachers will also be able to see firsthand any behavior problems so that they do not have to be relayed secondhand. Studnets are more likely to respond to discipline from their homeroom teachers, which will make the library a safer space for everyone.
  • Teachers are expected to help manage behavior of students in the library. There is no running, jumping on the furniture or beanbags, or moving the furniture. If students begin to fight over the beanbags they will be removed for the rest of the period. Students can read together but must remain quiet, using voice levels zero or one.
  • If a class cannot correct their behavior after repeated warnings, they will be returned to their homeroom without book checkout time. Library time can resume the next week if students are able to manage their behavior.
  • About five minutes before the end of the period, the librarian will make an announcement for students to check out books and begin tidying their area. If students left any books or mess on the floor or in their areas, they are expected to clean it up before leaving the library.
  • Students will not take their shelf markers back to their homerooms. Please make sure all students give their shelf marker to the librarian or library staff at the desk.
  • Each class is expected to leave on time when the bell signifies the end of class. The 5-minute warning should give ample time for checkout and clean-up. Punctuality is important because it allows the librarian to prepare for the next class.
  • Please remind parents about the class’s weekly library day. Every week the librarian will print out a list of overdue books for each class. Students are not allowed to check out new books if they have an overdue book. They are allowed to check out two English books and two Chinese books at a time. Exceptions are only made if a student needs to check out a third book for an assignment.
  • If a student has lost a book, please contact the librarian for information about paying the fee and clearing the student’s account. That information can also be found at the bottom of our Library Rules page.
