Lions, tigers, and bears, oh my! Check out an animal book this week to learn fun facts, practice finding the “Just Right” book, and experience new worlds through the eyes of your favorite creatures.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if one day you woke up and your shiny white gnashers were exchanged for an elephant’s long tusks? For a start, you’d be able to lift up your family’s car with these strong teeth! Or how about a shark’s teeth? If you woke up with these you could earn lots of money from the tooth fairy as they fall out as often as every week! The book that we read together this week, What if you had Animal Teeth by Sandra Markle, is part of a series that introduce lots of wildly interesting information about animals. Other books in the series look at if you had animal eyes, ears, nose, or hair. After we read the book we had a quiz about the features of non-fiction books, such as the glossary, the table of contents, and fact boxes.

This week in G3-4’s library class, we explored the idea of finding “Just Right” books. To begin, we read Goldilocks and the Three Bears, where we saw “just right” porridge, chairs, and beds. We then learned about the Five Finger Strategy for finding “just right” books in English. When reading a page from a new book, students can check how many unfamiliar words they find. If there are no new words, or only one, the book might be too easy. If there are four, five, or more new words, the book is likely too difficult. Two or three new words on a page usually means the book is “just right” for the reader.
本周，在三至四年级的图书馆课上，我们一起探讨了如何挑选“难度刚刚好”（Just Right）的图书。课程伊始，我们阅读了《金发姑娘和三只熊》（Goldilocks and the Three Bears），故事里的金发姑娘找到了“温度刚刚好”的燕麦粥、“大小刚刚好”的椅子和“舒适度刚刚好”的床。随后，我们学习了用英文选书的“五指法则”（Five Finger Strategy）。在阅读一本新书的其中一页时，同学们可以数一数自己遇到了多少个生词。如果没有生词或只有1个生词，这本书可能太简单了；如果有4个、5个或更多生词，这本书可能太难了；而一页上有2到3个生词，通常意味着这本书对读者来说“难度刚刚好”。

Have you ever wondered how the library books are organized? The library uses something called “call numbers!” We talked about how call numbers for picture books are created and how they are arranged on the book shelves. Students also got a chance to practice creating call numbers, arranging them on a shelf, and looking for books using the call numbers. Future librarians in the making!
你有没有想过，图书馆里的书究竟是怎样排列整理的？图书馆使用的是一种叫做“索书号”（Call Numbers）的编码！我们向同学们讲解了绘本索书号的生成规则，以及它们在书架上的排列顺序。同学们还亲自体验了如何编排索书号、将图书按顺序上架，并根据索书号在书架上寻找图书。真是一群未来的“小小图书管理员”！

Sometimes a great way to teach students a new value is to show them a bad example! In No, David! by David Shannon, troublesome David can’t help but cause mischief! Students learned from his story how to be respectful to those around us, including how we can be respectful to students, teachers, and the school.
有时候，向同学们传授一种新价值观的好方法，就是向他们展示一个“反面教材”！在大卫·香农（David Shannon）的《大卫，不可以》（No, David!）一书中，淘气的大卫总是忍不住制造麻烦！同学们从他的故事中学会了如何尊重身边的人，包括如何尊重同学、老师以及学校。

We may not be learning about animal teeth or three bears, but we have lots of animal books in the library! Many students already know and love famous book series like Warriors by Erin Hunter and Dog Man by Dav Pilkey. Take a look at some of these other stories about different animals!
