Last month’s school bell music introduced students to the famous song “Cheek to Cheek,” sung by Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald. Louis Armstrong, the twentieth century trumpeter and singer once said, “If you have to ask what jazz is, you’ll never know.” His deep, scratchy-sounding voice is loved by many. Another famous song that Louis sang is a song called “What a Wonderful World,” and our book this week set the comforting song lyrics amongst illustrations by Tim Hopgood, bringing the song to life. We ended class by singing the two songs mentioned as well as learning about the life of Louis Armstrong.

How can we express our opinions? Characters in Red is Best by Kathy Stinson showed us how they expressed their opinions and gave reasons to support them. Students learned the difference between facts and opinions and discussed examples from the story. They also shared their own opinions and practiced explaining their thinking using the word “because.” It was a wonderful opportunity to develop critical thinking, reading comprehension, and speaking skills!

Every fiction book has a setting! What is a setting? It’s the “when and where” of a story. To do a deep-dive of this story aspect, we looked at some books we had previously read and discussed their when and where. The final challenge was for students to find a book and identify the setting of their book!

What do we do when we have a problem? Talk and Work It Out by Cheri Meiners teaches children how to solve problems and get along with others. The characters in the story show us how to listen, communicate our feelings, share, and work together to solve disagreements. It encourages children to be respectful, understand others, and build positive friendships.
