Library Lessons for G4 四年级图书馆课程
Dragons are a vivid and fascinating window into the folklore of peoples from around the globe. In The Truth about Dragons a beautifully poetic book by Julie Leung, we learned about dragons that fly in the clouds and control weather and those that live in caves and hoard piles of treasure. We see how a boy with mixed ancestry is told by his mother about the different dragons from Eastern and Western story-telling traditions. These two dragon types embody the hopes, fears, and values of the people from those places. His mother suggests that they can coexist in the boy as two truths, raising the idea that cultural beliefs are important yet subjective, and can enrich our lives.

All around the world, people depend on rivers to support their way of life. In library class, we read The Mighty Mississippi from RAZ to learn why this North American river is so important. Did you know that the Mississippi River is the 4th longest river in the world? Students learned that the water takes three months to travel from its starting point in Minnesota to its end point in the Gulf of Mexico. What a journey!

Speaking of mighty rivers, did you know that the name of the ancient civilization of Mesopotamia means “between two rivers?” The people who lived there were very advanced, with structured systems for trade, agriculture, and taxes. They also invented Cuneiform, the oldest writing system in history!

In Library Class this week, G4-6 reviewed what we already know about figurative language and the different types authors use to make their writing more interesting and expressive.
Our focus this week was personification and hyperbole. Students learned to recognize these forms of figurative language and discussed how authors use them to help readers create stronger pictures and ideas in their minds.
To put our learning into practice, students took part in a figurative language library hunt! Working around the library, they searched through books to find examples of personification and hyperbole. Students recorded and shared the examples they discovered. It was a fun, active way to practice our reading skills while exploring the many different books in our library!
